About Unnan City

Unnan City is located in the eastern part of Shimane prefecture, sharing its boundaries with Matsue City and Izumo City at its northern edge, and Hiroshima prefecture at its southern edge. The city is rich in scenic beauty, and has a population of 37,000. Tatara ironworks long operated in the mountainous side of the city, and many sites surviving today, evoke memories of the region’s ironmaking past. The city is also famous for the tales of Yamata-no-Orochi (the eight-headed-and-tailed serpent) described in Japan’s oldest chronicle, the ’Kojiki’, and many sites associated with this enduring myth have remained intact.
